Why Self-Awareness Matters in Wellness


For many women living with chronic illness, the intricate dialogues of our bodies, thoughts, and emotions play a crucial role in reconnecting with ourselves and fostering a more meaningful and joyful life. Which, to me, makes self-awareness one of the subtle paths to wellness.


Self-awareness is the capacity to engage deeply with our inner world. To decode physical sensations, emotional responses, and thought patterns. This practice is particularly vital for women facing chronic health challenges. As we cultivate self-awareness, we allow ourselves to:


  • Understand the subtle signals our bodies send us.

  • Identify triggers and patterns in our symptoms.

  • Create space for self-compassion and deliberate action.


By tuning into what our body, mind, and spirit communicate, we can take proactive measures in nurturing our well-being. This journey isn't just about surviving; it's about thriving and reclaiming our wildish self.

Steps to Build Self-Awareness


1. Start with Gentle Observation


Healing begins when we observe without judgment. Set aside a few moments daily to ask yourself:


  • How does my body feel right now?

  • What emotions am I experiencing?

  • What thoughts are running through my mind?


Engaging in this simple act of noticing allows us to build trust with ourselves, fostering a safe atmosphere that encourages healing. The goal is not to change anything immediately; rather, it's about honoring our experiences.


2. Use Tools to Tune In


To deepen our journey of self-awareness, we can utilize various practical tools such as:


Body Scan Practice


Find a quiet space and sit comfortably. Close your eyes and slowly direct your attention to each part of your body, progressing from your head to your toes. Pay close attention to sensations and areas of tension.

This practice fosters a deeper connection with our physical selves, helping us to be present and attuned to our bodily needs.


Journaling for Reflection


Maintaining a journal can significantly enhance self-awareness. Use it to reflect on your daily experiences, symptoms, thoughts, and emotions. Consider these prompts:


  • What emotions surfaced today?

  • Did I notice any physical changes?

  • What self-care actions supported my well-being?

Mindfulness rituals can help anchor us in the present moment. You might start your day with a few minutes of meditation, gentle stretching or mindful walks, where you deliberately engage with your surroundings. Notice the textures, colors, and sounds around you. Allow yourself to be fully present in the moment, connecting with both nature and your body; focus on your breath and allow each inhale and exhale to ground you in the now.


Through these rituals, we can create a sanctuary within ourselves, a sacred space that cultivates wellness and awareness.




4. Listen to Your Emotions


Emotions can act as powerful indicators of our internal state. When feelings arise, take a moment to acknowledge them without judgment. You might ask:


  • What emotion am I feeling right now?

  • What might this feeling be trying to tell me?

  • How can I honor this emotion while still prioritizing my health?


By treating our emotions as essential navigational guides, we learn more about our needs and our journey.



5. Seek Support From Community


Connecting with others who understand the complexities of living with chronic illness can be immensely healing. Seek out support groups or forums where you can share experiences, insights, and strategies. In these spaces you will find validation and camaraderie, whether in person or through online platforms. Engaging with others fosters a sense of belonging, reminding us that we are not alone in our journeys.



6. Practice Self-Compassion


Self-awareness is intertwined with self-compassion. As we recognize our struggles, we can also embrace grace and kindness towards ourselves. Remember that it’s okay to feel overwhelmed or exhausted; it doesn’t define our worth.


Engage in positive self-talk and practice affirmations that celebrate your strength and resilience. Recognizing our humanity is a vital part of the healing process.
